You can get to Tumpak Sewu from many routes. But the most common routes to Tumpak Sewu are from Probolinggo, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. All of them are Indonesian cities. The first two locates in East Java while Yogyakarta is a city present in the Special Region of Yogyakarta.

Probolinggo to Tumpak Sewu

The route to Tumpak Sewu from Probolinggo is traveling south of the city towards Lumajang Regency. The drive is around 3 hours maximum following the road along the slopes of Mount Semeru. After arriving at the main gate of waterfalls you have to climb down the stairs for approx 800m. From there you have to hike down the cliff with the help of a well-provided rope. After hiking, you have to cross a river to get a full view of these waterfalls.

You can get from Probolinggo to Tumpak Sewu by three means of transport. These three means have their own pros and cons. But the route is basically the same.

  • By a minibus and a taxi

This will take around 3 hours and 20 mins. First, the minibus will pick you from Probolinggo and will drop you at Cemoro Lawang. Here you can relax and refresh for a while. After that, a taxi will take you to Tumpak Sewu. The bus leaves 5 times a day from Probollingoo. All of this will cost you around 33$- 43$.

  • By a Taxi or a car

If you go without any stops it will take around 1 hour and 50 minutes. You can take your own car or you can rent a car. If not you can always rent a taxi. It will pick you from Probolinggo city and will drop you at the gate of Tumpak Sewu Waterfalls. the cost will be around 30$-40$ exclusive of fuel.

  • By booking a day tour

Surabaya to Tumpak Sewu


The route from Surabaya to Tumpak Sewu or Coban Sewu is from the road to Malang Regency. From Malang, you reach Dampit and finally Lumajang. From Lumajang, follow the same route till the gates of Tumpak Sewu waterfalls. After entering the gates you have to do some physical walk until you reach in front of the waterfalls. The maximum time duration is around 2 hours and 50 minutes. But it can differ according to the number of stops and means of transports.

The following four transport options are available to travel from Surabaya to Tumpak Sewu.

  • By a train and a taxi

A train leaves 4 times a day from Gubeng train station in Surabaya. It takes you to Malang in about 1 hour and 55 minutes. The train ticket is around 2$ – 11$.  From Malang, a taxi will take you to the waterfalls in 56 minutes. The fare of the taxi will be around 20$ – 24$.

  • By a bus and a taxi

A bus leaves 4 times a day from Surabaya Kota to Malang. It will around 3 hours to reach the Regency. The ticket will be around 7$. From Malang, a taxi will take you to the waterfalls in around 1 hour. The cost will be 23$ – 28$.

  • By a private car or a taxi

You can take your own car or you can rent a car/taxi. Without any stops from Surabaya to Tumpak Sewu waterfalls the drive is around 2 hours and 15 minutes. The one-way fare is around 50$ – 60$. And if you take your own car the fuel cost will be around 8$ – 11$.

  • By local Tour Agencies

Booking a day tour to Tumpak Sewu waterfalls is another option. There are plenty of local tour agencies in Indonesia that will guide you around the whole trip. Their packages include pick and drop services, tour guides, highway taxes, and parking fees. The cost is different for every route.

Yogyakarta to Tumpak Sewu


The route to Tumpak Sewu waterfalls from Yogyakarta is the longest. The duration of the travel is around 7 hours and 19 minutes. From the Special Region of Yogyakarta, you first travel to Surakarta in Central Java. From Surakarta, you enter East Java. Here the route differs according to the transport options.

There are seven differents ways to travel from Yogyakarta to Tumpak Sewu Waterfalls.

  • By train and a taxi

A train leaves from Yogyakarta Togu 4 times a day. It takes you to Kepenjen in about 6 hours and 33 minutes. Kepenjen is near Malang Regency. From Kepenjen a taxi will take you to Tumpak Sewu waterfalls in 46 minutes. The cost of all this is around 25$ – 38$.

  • By bus and a taxi

A bus from Yogyakarta leaves once daily to Malang. It takes around 8 hours to reach there. From Malang, a 56-minute drive by taxi will take you to Tumpak waterfalls. The cost will be around 30$ – 35$.

  • By a private taxi or a car

Directly from Yogyakarta to Tumpak Sewu the one-way taxi fare is around 120$ – 150$. If you take your car the fuel cost will be around 22$ – 35$. The time duration is 5 hours and 14 minutes.

  • Fly to Malang

You can also fly to Malang to reach the waterfalls. First, you take a 10 minutes train from Yogyakarta Lempuyangan Station to Stasiun Maguwo. From here you reach the international airport of Adisutjipto. Take a 4-hour flight from this airport to Malang. After reaching Malang take a taxi to reach the waterfalls in about 1 hour. All of this will cost you around 100$ – 179$.

  • Fly to Noto Hadinegoro

From Adisutjipto international airport a 5-hour and 20 minutes flight will take you to Noto Hadinegoro. From here a 1 hour 52 minutes drive from a taxi will take you to Tumapak Sewu waterfalls. The cost of all this will be around 105$ – 176$.

  • Fly to Juanda International

This route is quite lengthy and complicated but it will only cost you 57$ – 87$. First, from Adisutjipo, you fly to Juanda. From here you move to Juanda Surabaya and take a bus. In 45 minutes you reach Surabaya Bungurasih Bus Station. Walk for about 15 minutes to Waru. From Waru finally, take a train to Malang. From Malang, take a taxi to the Tumpak Sewu waterfalls. The total time duration will be around 7 hours and 47 minutes.
